Buses run regularly between Hawick and Newcastleton and Carlisle and Newcastleton, with services provided by Telford’s Coaches. Journey times vary but generally are around 45 minutes from Hawick and 50 minutes from Carlisle. Please note there is no service on a Sunday and that bikes cannot be carried on this service.

By train
For access to Newcastleton by train, Carlisle is the most convenient in terms of connections and services, although Gretna is closer, at around 32km from the trail head.
There are regular services to Carlisle run by Virgin Trains and Northern Trains, and First Scotrail from Dumfries, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle Upon Tyne. Virgin also provides intercity services from elswhere in Britain. First Scotrail and Northern Trains run services to Gretna.

Journey time to Carlisle is 35 minutes from Dumfries, around 1hr 10 minutes from Glasgow and 1hr 20 minutes from both Edinburgh and Newcastle. Journey time to Gretna is between 10 and 15 minutes from Carlisle.
