The Merrick Footpath

About The Merrick Footpath

This footpath leads you from Bruce's Stone (3 miles on from the visitor centre) to the summit of South Scotlands highest mountain at 843 metres. The footpath begins at the Bruce's stone car park, and climbs through woodland before emerging onto the open hill, about half way up. The first summit you meet in Benyellary, before you drop down and then back up onto the Merrick. The Merrick should only be attempted by experienced hillwalkers. Remember mountain weather condidtions can change quickly, ensure you have adequate clothing, food and are wearing sturdy footwear.

How to get there:

The Merrick Footpath can be started from Glentrool Visitor Centre in Galloway Forest Park. Newton Stewart is the nearest town or village.

From Newton Stewart take A714 signposted to Girvan for eight miles. Take right turn at Bargrennan signposted Galloway Forest Park. Take next right turn just past Glentrool village signpost to Glentrool Visitor Centre.

By Bus: 359, goes from Newton Stewart to Ayr, stopping at Glentrool Village
