Long Cairn Trail

Take a trip 5000 years back in time and visit on the best examples of a Long Cairn in Southern Scotland. Once a focus for ceremonial gatherings, the remains of the dead were placed in stone lined graves within the body of the cairn. This trail follows forest roads and passes through a forest habitat of all ages, from recently felled open areas to 70 year old mature conifer woodland.

How to get there:

Long Cairn Trail can be started from Dykecrofts Car Park in Newcastleton Forest which is part of Forests of the Scottish Borders. Newcastleton is the nearest town or village.

From Canonbie or Bonchester Bridge take the B 6357, then take the unclassified road at the southern end of Newcastleton village and follow the signs for Dykecrofts.
